ABOUT UNISOUND STUDIOS
In the Beginning
Unisound began its recording activities in Solomon Islands in 1992 after spending many years prior to that as a Live Band in the local music scene. This development was further established with a change in ownership and management.
An entity was incorporated as "UNISOUND ENTERPRISES LIMITED" in February 1993 and since been trading as "Unisound Studios" & "Unisound Productions". The main objectives of this business are: Recording Studio, Cassette & CD production, Music Publishing & Artist management, Distributor and Agent for Music products, Concert Production, P.A. Hire, and other aspects of the Music & Entertainment industry.
The Studio
The recording activities started with a modest 8 track Analogue Tape Recorder, but soon gained momentum with numerous popular song releases. Only a handful of projects were done back then because it was not a full time activity. By 1995, Unisound took a serious commitment to invest in the then much publicized "ADAT" Recording system, and became a 32 track Digital Studio. This upgrade basically took Unisound to becoming more competitive, and ultimately opening up opportunities to produce music products marketable (better quality) not only locally but within the Pacific region as well. This soon paved the way for many Artists to realize their potential and take advantage of the facilities available for their recording projects. Artists with Unisound were then exposed to a much wider audience and also making some financial return for themselves ... the quest for Artists to become regionally accepted was born.
The Journey
To broaden the experience and exposure of our local musicians, Unisound then engaged directly in another pioneer project of inviting popular and successful international musicians to perform in Solomon Islands. Both experienced and aspiring musicians were able to "look and learn" from these more experienced Artists (the likes of Daniel Rae Costello, Graeme Connors, and Slaves - the original band for Lucky Dube, to name a few), and even mingle with them to share their interests. This exercise had tremendous effect on our local musicians although it was not financially rewarding for Unisound. There is no doubt that the indirect "spin offs" were invaluable to the industry, for it helped to "open the eyes" of many musicians who soon realized their own potential and began their own journey for "fame and fortune" in this industry.
Within a few years, Unisound took on another pioneer project, and worked with a selection of talented local musicians to compete in overseas "South Pacific International Song Contest". This effort was rewarded when they won Major prizes in 2 consecutive years (1996 & 1997). Contestants were from all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Romania, USA, Japan, and other Pacific island nations. Once again, the experience and exposure for the musicians cannot be measured enough. It was a real confidence booster for many Solomon Islands musicians to see this level of achievement. It was a proud moment for the Solomon Islanders (including the Solomon Islands Consulate Officers in Brisbane) who attended that event to see the Solomon flag being raised and the country's anthem played during the prize presentation.
Today, most of those who had directly involved in the various Unisound projects are not only recognized as some of the best locally, but also doing their own music related projects or businesses successfully. Unisound is still in touch with many of them who continue to work together in many projects. Unisound endeavors to continue such participation in further developments in the future.
Current Developments
Not wanting to get left behind in the ever changing technology within this industry, Unisound had taken another bold step to upgrade its studio facilities once again. Unisound is now equipped with a computer based Digital Recording System "Soundscape R.Ed" in its main studio in Solomon Islands. The main Console and other important aspects of the studio has also been upgraded and reconfigured. Ask any Artist who have recorded with Unisound and they will manifest their satisfaction in both sound and production quality.
There is also a second digital production studio facility designed as a "Mobile Studio" setup for off island jobs or projects requiring less equipment & flexibility to move around. Unisound is currently working on bringing its services to many smaller islands around the Solomons, starting with Gizo which is already in the "pipeline" with a premises secured. This will enable Artists in the Western Provinces of Solomon Islands to have access to the "Unisound quality of production". For more information on this Gizo project or if you wish to arrange the Mobile Studio to your Province, please contact David Chow on telephone (677) 22854 or write to P.O.Box 1783, Honiara, Solomon Islands. Other relevant info for the recording projects are available on this WEBSITE, or send an email to unisound@djgl.com.sb for more details.
Unisound Studios offers a complete solution for musicians desiring to produce their music albums; whether on a "studio hire" basis, sign up a "Royalty" based contract with Unisound, or to collaborate in other means for any project. With the well equipped digital and analog audio production facilities, full in-house solution for duplication, graphics, and final packaging of your audio product, you can be sure you are receiving the best impact for your album project.
Off-shore Developments
KASELELIA... as you are often greeted warmly in Pohnpei, the capital of Federated States of Micronesia. Unisound is proud to be part of the development of music in these friendly isles.
"Unisound Studios - Pohnpei" is our recent addition to the Unisound establishment in the Pacific. One of our objectives is to establish a network with musicians and artists from all around the Pacific through exposure of their work and making their presence felt in this growing industry.
Unisound Studios - Pohnpei is currently structured as a "Project Studio", essentially only a production room for a few months in the year, but technically supported and operated by a team of experienced Pacific Islands personnel. This is operated by our "Mobile Studio" team, and handles recording projects "on the road" at scheduled times and venues. Alternating members of our production team in Solomon Islands will be assigned to travel to Pohnpei for pre-scheduled projects with various selected Artists from time to time, and this is expected to happen on an approximate 6 to 8 month intervals.
With approx. 18 Micronesian album releases already made available (see current releases in Pohnpei), Unisound will continue to work with Artists all over Micronesia, and perhaps even establish contact or similar Project Studios across the Micronesian region. With the flexibility of this Mobile Studio, it has become a reality to visit any island in the Pacific to produce local Artists. Parties interested in recording projects or wishing to establish contact with Unisound to explore similar arrangements in their country may submit expressions of interest via email to unisound@djgl.com.sb Please note that certain conditions and criteria's will be applicable.
Unisound endeavors to provide musicians and listeners with the unique island pulse that threads the Pacific. With the wide experience in the recording industry and with unique projects covering Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia, you can count on Unisound's exposure and acquaintance with various Pacific beats.
